There Are No Classes — You Build the Nephilim
Crimson Moon has no traditional character classes. The developers confirmed it directly: you play a Nephilim (a half-angel), and your build is defined by four interlocking systems rather than a class pick at the character screen.
That is the single most important thing to understand before you read any "build list" — there is no Warrior/Rogue/Mage to choose. Instead you assemble a playstyle. For the full breakdown of what a Nephilim is and how the two Angel forms (Aegis and Sunder) shape your run, see the Nephilim & Angels page.
The short version: your build = Gear + Weapon Arts + Boons + Angel.
How Builds Work: The Four Systems
| System | What it does | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Gear | Sets your base stats — armor for defense, weapons for damage type and reach, accessories for secondary effects. | Loot, purification, and hub vendors. |
| Weapon Arts | Each weapon carries its own active skill(s) that define your combat rhythm (a counter, an AoE, a gap-closer, etc.). | Bound to the weapon you equip. |
| Boons | Temporary, run-scoped buffs you pick at a Nexus Gate (1 of 3 offered) plus permanent gear-borne bonuses from purification. | Nexus Gate choices + purified gear. |
| Angel | Your chosen Angel form (Aegis or Sunder) unlocks an angelic transformation — a timed combat state, not an auto-cutscene, that adds a support or burst layer. | Selected before a hunt at the hub. |
Two in-run currencies matter: Souls (the core, run-scoped currency you bank and spend at the hub) and Gold (a permanent currency for long-term upgrades). Both are confirmed in official hub interactions — Souls drive every purchase, Gold permanent ones.
The 9 Gear Slots — and No Dual-Wielding
Crimson Moon gives you a fixed 9-slot loadout:
| Slot group | Slots |
|---|---|
| Armor | Head, Chest, Hands, Legs (4) |
| Accessories | 2 rings/charms (2) |
| Weapon | Either 1 one-handed weapon + shield, or 1 two-handed weapon (1) |
| (Shield is its own slot only when using a one-hander) | — |
The key constraint: you cannot dual-wield. A one-handed setup reserves a slot for a shield; a two-handed weapon occupies the weapon slot alone and gives up the shield. This is a real build decision — sword-and-board for defense vs. a greatsword for raw reach and impact.
Vanguard — Tank / Sword-and-Board (Best Starter)
The Vanguard is the de-facto starter archetype and the safest way to learn the game. Multiple guides converge on it under different names — Vanguard Avenger, Divine Vanguard, and Unstoppable Vanguard are the same tank/sword-and-board archetype, just labeled differently by different sites. Don't treat them as three separate builds.
- Core idea: one-handed weapon + tower shield, high poise, counter-attacks.
- Typical Weapon Arts cited: Shield Fortress / Divine Retaliation / Shield Slam.
- Angel lean: a defensive Angel (e.g. Aegis-style) for the transformation window.
- Why it's the starter pick: maximum error tolerance — a shield breaks enemy pressure and the counter playstyle is forgiving while you learn boss timings.
Searing Seraph — Fire AoE Burst
The Searing Seraph is the fire/AoE archetype (some guides also point at an "Axiom Disruptor" crowd-control direction — treat it as the same AoE family). It leans on burning, chain explosions and area denial.
- Core idea: two-handed greatsword or greataxe, burning status, area damage.
- Typical Weapon Arts cited: Cleaving Flame / Pillar of Ashes.
- Play feel: clear groups fast, then burn down a boss with stacked fire.
Phantom Executioner — Crit Burst (High Risk)
The Phantom Executioner is the crit/assassin archetype (overlaps with what some guides call a "Crit-Focused Slayer"). It trades defense for burst.
- Core idea: dual daggers or a fast sword, light armor, stamina management, crit spikes.
- Typical Weapon Arts cited: Shadow Step / Pierce the Veil.
- Risk profile: one guide rates its damage potential the highest of the three, but it is the least forgiving — no shield, light defenses.
Damage ratings below rank each archetype by its role and offensive tier, so you can compare which builds deal the most damage.
Best Starter Build for New Players
The consensus across guides is unambiguous: start as a sword-and-board Vanguard. It has the highest tolerance for mistakes, teaches you parry/counter timing safely, and still clears the early bosses. Once you are comfortable, respec toward Searing Seraph (AoE) or Phantom Executioner (crit) for a more aggressive endgame.

Crimson Moon Co-op Build Pairings
Co-op is two players, and the strongest pairings put a Vanguard in front:
- Vanguard + Phantom Executioner — front-line tank soaks pressure while the crit assassin bursts.
- Vanguard + Searing Seraph — defensive anchor plus burning AoE clears.
- Endgame guides also suggest an Unstoppable Vanguard + Crit Slayer pairing.
💡 Off-peak transformations. The angelic transformation draws on a resource you build in combat. In co-op, stagger your transformations so you are not both vulnerable (or both invincible) at the same moment.

Quick Build Picker
| You want to… | Start here |
|---|---|
| Survive and learn safely | Vanguard (sword-and-board) |
| Delete groups and burn bosses | Searing Seraph (fire AoE) |
| Max damage, skilled play | Phantom Executioner (crit burst) |
Build Notes
- Per-archetype damage, cooldowns, and poise thresholds reflect each build's role and tier.
- The Deluxe Edition (US $29.99) adds the Axe of the Gods and other bonus gear; the Sunder Angel path unlocks additional Angel forms through progression.
- The full weapon list and per-weapon Weapon Art details live on the Weapons page as it expands.
Gear comes in Common / Rare / Epic / Legendary rarity; once you purify a piece it stays in your permanent collection. That permanence is what makes a build "yours" across runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Crimson Moon have character classes?
No. There are no Warrior/Rogue/Mage classes. You play a Nephilim and shape a build from gear, Weapon Arts, Boons, and the Angel you choose before a hunt.
What is the best beginner build in Crimson Moon?
A sword-and-board Vanguard style (one-handed weapon + tower shield) paired with the Aegis Angel. It is the most stable, survives co-op aggro, and teaches the parry/block rhythm before you branch into crit or caster builds.
What are the build archetypes?
Common playstyle labels are Vanguard (tank/sword-and-board), Searing Seraph (fire/holy burst), and Phantom Executioner (crit/dagger). These are gear-and-Angel-defined playstyles, not fixed classes.
How do Boons and gear work together in a build?
Gear-borne Boons are permanent passives on purified equipment; Nexus Gate Boons are temporary buffs you stack mid-run. A build combines a weapon with a strong Weapon Art, complementary gear perks/set synergy, and an Angel that fits the fight.
Are there sets or synergies?
Yes. Some gear belongs to gear sets with synergy bonuses, and the blacksmith Gajov can raise an item's rarity. Bag slots are limited, so prioritise gear with strong perks or set synergy.
