Crimson Moon Nephilim & Angels

There are no classes — you are a Nephilim, and your build comes from weapons, Boons and a chosen Angel.

Does Crimson Moon Have Classes?

No — and that is the point, not a gap. The developers state outright that there are no traditional character classes. You do not pick Warrior, Rogue or Mage at a class screen. Instead you play a Nephilim — a half-human, half-angel warrior — and your "class" is whatever you build it into.

This is the game's core differentiation, so lean into it: the question isn't "which class should I pick?" but "which build do I want to assemble?"

What Is a Nephilim?

The Steam store describes the Nephilim as a race of half-human, half-angel warriors, forged to guard the mortal world against hell's corruption. That is your only playable character — there is no subclass split, no origin choice that locks you into a role.

Think of the Nephilim as a blank canvas. The lore says what you are; the build system says how you fight.

Why "No Class" Is a Feature, Not a Lack

In a traditional RPG, picking a class locks your toolkit. In Crimson Moon:

  • Your toolkit is gear + Weapon Arts + Boons + Angel — all swappable.
  • You can pivot from a sword-and-board tank to a fire-AoE bruiser to a crit assassin just by changing equipment and your Angel, without a hard class respec wall.
  • "Vanguard," "Searing Seraph" and "Phantom Executioner" that you'll see on guide sites are archetype labels, not classes. For example, "Vanguard" is just the sword-and-board tank archetype — different sites call it Vanguard Avenger, Divine Vanguard or Unstoppable Vanguard. It is one playstyle, not three classes.

See the Best Builds page for the actual archetypes.

How Your "Class" Is Actually Built

Your identity is the sum of four systems:

SystemRole in your build
GearArmor, weapons and accessories set your base stats.
Weapon ArtsEach weapon's active skill defines your combat rhythm.
BoonsTemporary (Nexus Gate) and permanent (purified gear) buffs.
AngelA transformation form you pick before a hunt — a burst/support layer.

The Angel is the piece people mistake for a "class," so it gets its own section.

Angels & the Angelic Transformation

Before each hunt you choose an Angel to accompany you. In combat you build up an Angel-resource (sources call it divine charge / Angel Power) by fighting; once it is full you can activate the angelic transformation — a timed combat state, not an automatic cutscene.

While transformed you get:

  • a damage / stats / healing / attack-range boost,
  • a short invincibility window on activation,
  • and the resource then starts draining until the form ends.

💡 In co-op, stagger transformations so you're not both vulnerable (or both popping i-frames) at once.

Aegis vs Sunder — Which Angel Form?

Two Angel forms were available in previews:

AegisSunder
LeansMelee / defenseRanged + holy attacks
FeelFront-line, tankyKeep distance, divine damage
Best withSword-and-board VanguardSearing Seraph / ranged play

The two Angel forms are Aegis (melee/defense) and Sunder (ranged/holy). Some early coverage also calls the melee path "Ascension," but Aegis and Sunder are the confirmed form names.

Can You Unlock More Angels?

More Angel forms unlock through progression, expanding your transformation options as you play — each new spirit shapes your future builds.

Nephilim vs Angels — What's the Difference?

This trips up a lot of new players, so here it is plainly:

  • Nephilim = you. The half-angel race you control for the whole game. There is only one.
  • Angel = the companion transformation form you pick before a hunt — a temporary power layer, not a separate character.

You are always a Nephilim; the Angel is the form you channel mid-fight.
